Perfect Day in Manhattan Valley
Manhattan Valley has such a cool vibe. It used to be this rural valley surrounded by farmland, then it became a working-class neighborhood with deep Puerto Rican and Dominican roots, and you can still feel all those layers today. I love wandering around here — there are old prewar walkups, little mom-and-pop spots that have been around forever.
I usually start my day at Picky Barista — it’s this tiny café inspired by Peaky Blinders and they make really good Balkan coffee. Then I like to walk over to the Nicholas Roerich Museum. It’s tucked inside a brownstone, super quiet, free to enter, and honestly feels like stepping into another world — the paintings are all mystical and mountain-heavy, and it’s never crowded.
For lunch, Flor de Mayo Restaurant is my go-to. It’s a total neighborhood classic and they’ve been doing Chino-Latino food for decades — it’s the kind of place you walk out of really full and really happy.
After that, I usually end up at one of the parks nearby. If I want to feel like I’ve left the city, I’ll go to the North Woods in Central Park — it’s wild, a little hidden, and has these tiny waterfalls and trails.
