Little Vietnam in Chinatown

I recently explored Little Vietnam near Chinatown, and it was a delightful culinary adventure 🇻🇳✨

I began at Mắm on Forsyth Street. This cozy spot offers authentic Vietnamese street food, with standout dishes like bún đậu mắm tôm—fermented shrimp paste with crispy tofu and pork belly. The flavors are bold and true to Vietnamese roots .

Next, I visited Lai Rai, also on Forsyth Street. This unique venue combines a natural wine bar with a Vietnamese-inspired menu. I enjoyed their rotating ice cream flavors, such as fish sauce caramel and avocado, paired with a selection of natural wines in a relaxed setting.

I then stopped by the Mahayana Temple Buddhist Association in Chinatown, and the 16-foot golden Buddha inside is absolutely breathtaking. I lit incense, pulled a $1 fortune slip, and wandered around admiring the intricate red-and-gold details. It’s rooted in Chinese Mahayana Buddhism, but it’s a peaceful spot that’s loved by the wider Asian community, including Vietnamese locals.

For grocery shopping, I stopped by Tan Tin Hung Supermarket Supermarket on Bowery. This local market is known for its extensive selection of Vietnamese and Southeast Asian ingredients, making it a go-to spot for authentic cooking supplies.

Exploring this vibrant neighborhood was a sensory delight—aromatic herbs, sizzling street food, and the warm ambiance of family-run shops. If you’re in the area, it’s a must-visit for anyone craving authentic Vietnamese flavors. #lemon8partner

... Read moreIf you’re keen to dive deeper into the heart of Vietnamese culture right here in New York City, the 'Little Vietnam' area near Chinatown is an absolute must-visit. It’s more than just a cluster of restaurants; it’s a vibrant, sensory experience that transports you straight to Southeast Asia. After exploring the initial spots, I often find myself wandering the smaller side streets, discovering even more hidden gems. The beauty of places like Mắm isn't just in the famous bún đậu mắm tôm; it’s in the entire atmosphere. Imagine stepping into a cozy establishment, perhaps with soft lighting and unique plants, just like the one where I enjoyed a refreshing drink. Every dish feels like it's been prepared with generations of tradition, a true taste of home-cooked Vietnamese flavors that are hard to find elsewhere. Don't be afraid to try other street food delicacies; the pho here is often rich and aromatic, and the bánh mì sandwiches are perfectly crispy and flavorful, packed with fresh ingredients. Lai Rai also offers a truly unique blend of cultures. The idea of pairing natural wines with innovative ice cream flavors like fish sauce caramel or avocado is genius! It creates a relaxed, modern vibe that makes it a perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. I love how the small bowls of ice cream are presented alongside a glass of red wine, inviting you to savor each moment. It's a testament to how traditional flavors can be reimagined in exciting new ways. And for those who love to cook, a visit to Tan Tin Hung Supermarket is an adventure in itself. Beyond the usual suspects, I always discover something new and exciting. You’ll find rows of fresh herbs, exotic fruits, and an incredible array of sauces and spices. I was particularly excited to pick up some sweetened ginger (Mứt Gừng) – it’s perfect for a sweet snack or even to add a unique zing to desserts. It’s a fantastic place to stock up on authentic ingredients to try your hand at Vietnamese cooking at home. The market truly showcases the breadth of Southeast Asian culinary traditions. Finally, the Mahayana Temple offers a peaceful retreat from the bustling city. While it’s rooted in Chinese Mahayana Buddhism, its welcoming atmosphere is embraced by the wider Asian community, including many Vietnamese locals. Lighting incense and taking a moment to admire the intricate red-and-gold details offers a serene break, allowing you to reflect on the rich cultural tapestry of the neighborhood. It’s a beautiful reminder of the spiritual side of this incredible community. This entire area is a treasure trove of experiences, waiting to be discovered, offering a genuine slice of Vietnam right here in NYC.
