Playing with bowing deer in Japan

I spent the day at Nara Park, and honestly, it felt like stepping into a Disney movie! Hundreds of friendly, free-roaming deer wandered around, bowing politely for snacks

Feeding them from my hand was both thrilling and a little surreal — these gentle creatures are surprisingly bold! 🥰

All you have to do is pay for their cookies, which you can pick up at the entrance of Nara Deer Park. The deer can be very greedy, so always keep snacks hidden. If you want them to leave you alone, extend both arms and put up both hands.

The park's serene paths, ancient temples, and picturesque dardens made wanderina around comnletelv neaceful. It's the perfect mix of nature, culture, and unforgettable animal encounters. Definitely a must-visit when in Japan!

... Read moreVisiting Nara Park offers a truly unique wildlife encounter that feels magical and immersive. The bowing behavior of the deer is specially notable—they’ve learned that bowing often leads to treats, making it an endearing tradition for visitors to witness and interact with. When feeding them, it’s important to buy the designated deer cookies available at park entrances, as these are safe for the animals and encourage gentle behavior. While playful and friendly, the deer can quickly become quite eager and bold, sometimes even attempting to snatch snacks directly from your hands or pockets. Keeping snacks securely hidden and knowing the polite gesture to ward them off—raising both hands and extending your arms—is essential for managing your encounter peacefully. Beyond the deer, Nara Park is steeped in rich history and natural beauty. Many visitors like to take leisurely strolls along the park’s quiet paths, which are lined with tall trees and scenic ponds. The park also hosts several ancient temples and shrines, such as Todai-ji Temple, home to the Great Buddha statue, making it a culturally rich destination. The combination of approachable wildlife, cultural landmarks, and tranquil garden settings makes Nara Park a must-see attraction for anyone traveling to Japan. It offers an exceptional opportunity to connect with nature, enjoy wildlife observation, and absorb centuries-old Japanese traditions all in one place. This spot truly feels like stepping into a fairytale where nature and culture coexist harmoniously.
