... Read moreSo, you're planning a road trip from Houston? That's fantastic! After my recent journey (which ended up in Houston, but these tips apply universally!), I realized how much preparation makes a difference. Beyond just getting rest and saving for gas, here are a few more things I always consider when hitting the open road from the Lone Star State. First off, choosing your destination is key. From Houston, you've got so many incredible options! Are you heading west towards the captivating desert landscapes of West Texas or even further to New Mexico? Or perhaps a shorter coastal trip to Galveston, or a dive into history in San Antonio or Austin? Knowing where you're going helps you pack smart. For instance, if you're hitting the desert, definitely bring plenty of water and sun protection. And if you're like me and travel with a furry friend – my little French Bulldog is always my co-pilot! – make sure you've researched pet-friendly stops and accommodations along your route. Speaking of packing, if you've got a lot of gear, consider a rooftop cargo bag like I used. It's a lifesaver for freeing up space inside the car, especially if you're bringing camping equipment or luggage for a longer trip. Just make sure it's securely fastened! And don't forget your car's essentials: check tire pressure, oil, and coolant before you leave. I always make sure my navigation map is updated and I have a physical map or downloaded offline maps as a backup, especially when driving through areas with spotty cell service. Following the Speed Limit 65 signs is one thing, but knowing your route inside out prevents unnecessary detours. Another pro tip, building on the gas money idea: research gas prices along your planned route using apps. Prices can vary wildly, and knowing where to fill up can save you a pretty penny. Also, think about entertainment beyond your phone – playlists, podcasts, audiobooks make long stretches of highway much more enjoyable. And snacks! A cooler full of healthy snacks and drinks is a game-changer. My personal experience taught me that stopping at unique places, like an Information Center (especially when you see a Texas flag proudly waving), can offer unexpected local insights and a chance to stretch your legs. Ultimately, road trips are about the journey as much as the destination. Be flexible, enjoy the scenery, and make memories. Safe travels on your next adventure from Houston!
