This is the #1 thing dog owners shouldn’t do

WINTER WARNING FOR DOG OWNERS ⚠️

After 20 years in veterinary medicine, I'm begging you to check your dog's paws. Rock salt and ice melt are causing chemical burns and poisoning dogs every single winter—and most owners have no idea.

I'll never forget the Labrador who came into my ER last January...

Severely burned paw pads. Vomiting. Lethargy. All from licking ice melt off his paws after a simple walk around the block.

His owner had NO idea this was even dangerous.

That's why I made this video. In 30 seconds, I'm showing you how to protect your dog from one of winter's most overlooked dangers.

Because every dog deserves pain-free walks, no matter the season.

Don't wait until it's an emergency. Your dog is counting on you.

... Read moreAs a pet owner, I’ve witnessed firsthand the distress caused by winter ice melting products on dogs’ paws. One cold winter, I noticed my dog limping after our usual walk. Initially, I thought it was just the cold, but upon closer inspection, his paw pads were cracked and irritated. Through research, I learned that rock salt and certain ice melts contain harsh chemicals that can cause chemical burns and even internal poisoning if dogs lick their paws. To prevent this, I started rinsing my dog’s paws with warm water immediately after every walk. This simple step washes away harmful residues that would otherwise irritate the skin or be ingested. Additionally, applying a protective paw balm before heading out provided a barrier against the salt and ice melt. For really harsh conditions, I began using dog booties, which are especially useful on icy sidewalks. I also switched to pet-safe ice melts for my property, which are formulated to be less toxic but still effective. Watching for excessive paw licking is key since it’s often a sign of discomfort or chemical burns. Early detection can save your dog from a painful emergency visit to the vet. Every winter brings unique challenges for dog owners, but being aware of these hidden dangers like rock salt and ice melt can ensure your furry friend stays healthy and comfortable. Taking these preventive steps has allowed my dog to enjoy pain-free walks even during harsh winter months, and I highly recommend other pet owners do the same for their companions.
