here's my second 1919 s mint mark

2025/8/23 Edited to

... Read moreIt's always a thrill to stumble upon a piece of history, isn't it? My recent find, this beautiful 1919 S Lincoln penny, is a perfect example! When I first started collecting, understanding mint marks felt like solving a secret code, but it's actually one of the most crucial details for identifying and valuing these old coins. So, what exactly is a mint mark? It's a small letter on a coin that tells you which U.S. Mint facility produced it. For Lincoln Wheat Pennies like our 1919 examples, you'll typically find mint marks 'D' for Denver, 'S' for San Francisco, or no mint mark at all, which signifies it was made in Philadelphia. This little detail can drastically change a coin's rarity and value! Now, if you're holding a 1919 Lincoln penny and wondering 'where is the mint mark on wheat pennies?', here's my tip: flip it to the 'obverse' side, where Abraham Lincoln's profile is featured. Look closely below the date "1919" – that's where you'll find it! For my 1919 S penny, that 'S' is clearly visible right there. It's often small, so sometimes you might need a magnifying glass, especially if the coin is worn. You'll also see the familiar phrases like 'IN GOD WE TRUST' above Lincoln's head and 'LIBERTY' to his left. Let's talk about the different 1919 pennies because this was one of the questions that came up for me when I was learning! 1919 (Philadelphia - No Mint Mark): These were minted in the highest quantity, over 391 million! While still a century old, they are generally the most common of the 1919 pennies. If you find a 1919 wheat penny with no mint mark, you've got a Philadelphia issue. It's a great starter coin for any collection. 1919 D (Denver Mint): The Denver mint produced significantly fewer pennies that year, around 57 million. This makes the 1919 D wheat penny more sought after than its Philadelphia counterpart. Finding one in good condition is definitely a nice score! 1919 S (San Francisco Mint): This is where my second find comes in! The San Francisco mint produced the fewest Lincoln pennies in 1919, with a mintage of just over 139 million. While the D mint had a lower mintage, the 'S' mint is still considered a key date for many collectors due to its relatively lower mintage compared to Philadelphia and consistent collector demand. My 1919 S penny proudly displays its mint mark below the "1919 S" date. The reverse side, with 'ONE CENT' and 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' surrounded by those beautiful wheat stalks, is always a classic sight. Understanding these differences helps us appreciate the history behind each coin. Always check the mint mark – it's like a tiny fingerprint that tells a big story! Happy hunting, and who knows, maybe you'll find your own rare 1919 S or D wheat penny soon!
