If you're planning a visit to Xiamen, it's helpful to consider some extra advice to make your trip smoother and more enjoyable. First, transportation around Xiamen is very convenient whether using Didi rideshare apps or public transport. If you want to explore nearby Quanzhou, the train is the fastest and most comfortable way to get there, typically around an hour each way. When visiting Gulangyu Island, keep in mind that no cars are allowed, so prepare comfortable walking shoes and maybe a light backpack, as you'll be exploring mostly on foot. The frequent ferry departures from Dongdu Passenger Terminal make planning flexible. Try to get there early to avoid crowds. For food lovers, Xiamen offers a wealth of regional flavors like Minnan cuisine and Taiwan-influenced dishes. Don’t miss trying specialties such as 三杯鸡 (Three-Cup Chicken), 蟹黄面 (Crab Roe Noodles), or local street snacks like oyster omelette and yam cake. I recommend pairing meals with bubble tea from popular shops like 一树一叶 for a delicious treat. Accommodation-wise, choosing hotels like the Courtyard by Marriott that offer sea views and great service can greatly add to your experience. Booking ahead for places near major attractions such as Xiamen University or Zhongshan Road helps reduce transit time. Exploring night markets and live music venues like Xiang Livehouse offers a great cultural immersion after daytime sightseeing. Budgeting about 300 RMB per table for shows and drinks is typical. Finally, don’t forget your camera for spots like the rainbow walls of Shapowei, the cable car ride to Zhonggu, and the tranquil gardens on Gulangyu Island. These make for memorable photographs and lasting travel memories. By combining this itinerary with practical local tips, you can tailor your Xiamen trip to your interests and create a journey filled with authentic experiences and enjoyable discoveries.
