Working as a medical assistant in family medicine throughout the pandemic was a uniquely challenging experience that many outsiders might not fully understand. The constant pressure to support patients remotely, especially urging those with dangerously low oxygen levels to seek emergency care, was emotionally exhausting. I remember countless phone calls where delivering news about worsening patient conditions, or even their passing, weighed heavily on all of us. Another hardship was the shortage of protective equipment. Reusing N95 masks, while necessary, added a continuous layer of worry about our safety and potential exposure. Unlike the lighter moments you might see online, such as TikTok dances shared by healthcare workers to boost morale, much of our time was spent under intense stress without such distractions. Throughout this time, the importance of teamwork and resilience in the clinic became even more apparent. Despite the ongoing difficulties, seeing patients improve and knowing we were making a difference motivated us to keep going. Sharing these experiences not only sheds light on the realities of medical assistant life during a global health crisis but also honors the dedication of many healthcare professionals who quietly faced these struggles every day.
