In the spring of 2026, the Imperial Hotel will open a new hotel in Gion, Kyoto. It will be the first new hotel to open in about 30 years since the Imperial Hotel Osaka in 1996, and the fourth base in the history of the brand.
The Imperial Hotel, which is called Japan s State Guest House and has welcomed important guests from all over the world, chose Gion, Kyoto. Alley with tea houses, unique atmosphere where tradition breathes as it is. For a long time, travelers have called it the most Kyoto-like Kyoto. It is also clear why the Imperial Hotel chose this place. It is because I believed that in Gion, the hospitality that the Imperial Hotel cherishes is the most like the Imperial Hotel and delivered the deepest.
The Imperial Hotel Kyoto was planned not simply to build a new hotel, but to connect the history of Gion. The hotel was built on the site of the 90-year-old theater "Yasaka Kaikan," but the journey was never easy. While redesigning the old building for earthquake resistance, we finally got permission after about three years of discussions about strict height restrictions in the Gion area. Thanks to this, Yasaka Kaikan, which was once in danger of being demolished, was reborn as the Imperial Hotel in a new form.
The Imperial Hotel Kyoto will open on March 5, 2026. The guest rooms are divided into three areas: the main building, which has been reinterpreted with a modern feel, the main building preservation area, which leaves some of the window frames and pillars of the Yasaka Kaikan, and the north building, which has the first guest rooms equipped with tatami mats at the Imperial Hotel. It is fun to choose different atmospheres in one hotel.
On the 7th floor of the main building of the hotel, there is a signature bar "Old Imperial Bar." Here, you can enjoy "Mount Hiei," which is the original cocktail of the Imperial Hotel "Mount Fuji" plus Kyoto matcha. It is a signature drink that can only be tasted at the Imperial Hotel Kyoto.
