Okay, seriously, if you're ever in Hawaii, you absolutely HAVE to check out The BARN Market! My last visit was just epic – the atmosphere was buzzing with so many people and countless vendors, all sharing such good vibes. It truly feels like the heart of the community coming alive, and it's my favorite way to support local businesses here on the Big Island. Walking through, I was blown away by the sheer variety. You'll find everything from incredible food stalls to unique craft vendors, all run by passionate locals. For me, the food is always the highlight, and this market did not disappoint! I started my foodie adventure at Kimo Melias Hawaiian Grindz, and let me tell you, their nachos are a game-changer. I tried both the Laulau nachos and the Kalua nachos – each bite was packed with flavor, that creamy sauce, diced tomatoes, and purple taro just made them unforgettable. And if you're feeling adventurous, their Squid Luau Nachos are definitely worth a try! Next up, I had to grab a classic Hawaiian plate lunch. The Shave Ice Shack might sound like it’s just for desserts, but their garlic shrimp plate is out of this world! Imagine perfectly cooked shrimp with crispy garlic, fluffy white rice, that comforting macaroni salad, and sweet corn – it’s the ultimate comfort food and so satisfying. Beyond the savory, the drink selection was fantastic too. I loved exploring all the unique concoctions. Sips By Kailoa had some really refreshing options like their 'Straw-nilla bliss' and the intriguing 'Mango sticky rice MATCHA.' I even spotted their vibrant 'MOANA(SF)' red soda, which looked super fun. And don't even get me started on the creamsicle drink from Four Sisters and Co. – it was pure nostalgic bliss in a cup. To top it all off, I treated myself to a 'Mango sticky rice smoothie' from Doughlicious Sweets, which was the perfect sweet ending with its layered flavors and tapioca. What I love most about The BARN Market isn't just the amazing food and unique finds, but the spirit of aloha that permeates every corner. It's about Hawaiʻi doing its thing, people working hard for themselves, and us, as a community, showing up and supporting them. Every purchase feels like you're contributing directly to someone's dream and the local economy. If I could, I’d buy everything local, and this market makes it so easy and enjoyable to do just that.
