Unlike regular metal or even masonry bits, diamond bits don't cut in the traditional sense; they grind. Glass is super hard but brittle, so you need that abrasive action to prevent shattering. If you've ever tried using a standard drill bit, you know the frustration – it just slips and scratches, or worse, cracks the glass. That's why switching to a diamond-tipped bit, even a small 6mm or 8mm one for drainage, makes a world of difference. The thought of using the 'wrong size' used to haunt me, and I totally get it! Mark exactly where you want your hole with a permanent marker. Water, Water, Water! This is crucial. As I mentioned in my original post, keep the area continuously wet. I use a spray bottle, or for more control, I'll create a small 'dam' around my mark with plumber's putty or clay and fill it with water. This keeps the bit cool, reduces friction, and flushes away glass dust, which is important for both safety and bit longevity. Start Slow and Angled: Don't press hard! Start your drill at a slow speed, holding the bit at a slight angle (about 45 degrees) to create a small notch. Once it bites, slowly bring the drill upright. This prevents the bit from "walking" all over the surface. Gentle Pressure, Moderate Speed: Maintain light, consistent pressure. Let the diamond do the work. High speed generates too much heat, even with water, leading to cracks. A cordless drill on a lower speed setting is often ideal. Breakthrough Carefully: As you get close to going through, ease up on the pressure even more. The glass can chip or crack easily at the exit point. Once you're through, you can gently deburr the edges with fine-grit sandpaper or a diamond burr tool if needed, but often, with the right technique, the holes are quite clean. Avoiding Common Pitfalls: One common mistake I've seen is using the wrong type of bit (like a regular twist drill or even a masonry bit that might be mistakenly called a "pilot bit" for other materials).
