Feelings communication board.
Since I started working with special Ed students, I decided to create my own communication boards to help children better communicate their needs and feelings. I will be working on some more creations. Please let me know if you have more ideas š” #specialed #communicationboard #children #education
Working with special education students has shown me the incredible value of communication boards, especially those that focus on feelings. These boards act as a bridge, helping non-verbal or minimally verbal children express their emotional states such as feeling happy, sad, excited, or confused, which can often be difficult for them to convey otherwise. From my experience, itās important that these communication boards include a range of common emotions and needsālike 'sick,' 'sleepy,' 'thirsty,' or 'hungry'āso kids can easily point to what they feel at any moment. Using simple, clear images next to the words can be a game changer, making it more intuitive and engaging. Another tip is to personalize boards based on the childās preferences and most frequent feelings. For example, one child might often feel shy or bored, so including those words with friendly icons helps them communicate better without frustration. Regular updates to the board as children grow and their vocabulary expands keep it relevant and useful. In practice, I found that incorporating these boards into daily routines and encouraging caregivers and teachers to use them consistently fosters better emotional understanding and reduces behavioral outbursts stemming from communication challenges. Itās also rewarding to involve the children in choosing or even creating some of the images and termsāit empowers them and makes the board a collaborative tool. If youāre thinking of creating your own feelings communication board for special education, consider starting with a set of core emotions and basic needs, using bright visuals, and then adapt based on feedback from the children who use it. This approach not only supports their communication but also nurtures their emotional awareness and confidence.
