Upstairs’ Renovation, My Downstairs Disaster 😡💧

I never imagined my balcony would turn into a mini swimming pool…

But thanks to the upstairs renovation, their debris clogged the main sewer pipe.

Water rose, flooded my balcony, and destroyed my raised platform.

When contractors cut corners, innocent homeowners pay the price.

... Read moreDealing with water pipe backups caused by neighboring renovations can be extremely stressful and costly. In my case, the debris from the upstairs renovation clogged the main sewer pipe, leading to severe flooding on my balcony and damage to my newly built raised platform. The mess was overwhelming—ankle-deep dirty water filled the area, and the foul smell made it unbearable to stay near. From this experience, I learned a few crucial tips that might help others facing similar situations: 1. **Act Quickly When You Notice Issues:** As soon as water started rising on my indoor balcony, I checked the void deck outside and found water gushing from the sewer pipe. Quick detection can minimize damage. 2. **Understand Whose Responsibility It Is:** Contacting HDB led to frustration because they redirected me to the Town Council, showing the importance of knowing who handles what in housing management. 3. **Avoid Building Raised Platforms Above Drain Holes:** Although it looked nice, the raised platform became the biggest trouble spot. If you’re thinking about this, reconsider, as it complicates repairs and cleanup. 4. **Prepare for Cleanup and Repair Costs:** These damages required us to break open parts of the platform—expensive and heartbreaking after a renovation. 5. **Hire Licensed Waste Disposal Contractors:** Proper removal of renovation debris can prevent clogging issues downstream. Always ensure contractors follow protocols. 6. **Regular Maintenance and Checks:** Especially if upstairs neighbors are renovating, communicate and suggest regular cleaning of common pipes. Sharing my story here so others can avoid similar distress. Renovation horror stories don’t always have happy endings, but being informed can at least reduce risk and cost. If you encounter backed-up pipes and flooding caused by neighbors’ work, document everything, act fast, and seek support from responsible authorities or building management.
