should I stay with him or break up?

In November 2023, I moved into a shared house. By December, my housemate (28M) and I started dating exclusively. He's a fantastic person, and I love spending time with him.

It was his birthday in February. He'd been really stressed at work and didn't know many people in the area, so I wanted to make it special. I booked him a massage, baked his favorite cake, and treated us to dinner. Everything was great, and it has continued to be that way.

Fast forward to tonight... He revealed that after the massage, the therapist offered a hug, and he accepted. He felt immense guilt and needed to tell me. He deeply regrets it and wishes he could take it back.

After a long conversation, I expressed that ending the relationship might be best. However, I'm incredibly happy with him, so I'm conflicted.

My question: Should I stay or break up? Can a healthy relationship recover from something like this?

... Read moreNavigating a relationship dilemma like this is incredibly tough, and I truly understand the swirl of emotions you must be feeling. It's not just about the act itself, but what it represents for your trust and the boundaries you both implicitly or explicitly hold. When you're facing a 'stay or leave' question, it often feels like you're caught between your heart and your head, especially when you love the person deeply. First, let's acknowledge the pain. It’s completely valid to feel hurt, confused, or even betrayed, regardless of his intentions or guilt. The fact that he felt immense guilt and confessed shows a level of honesty and remorse, which is a crucial detail to consider. Some might say this 'embrace' was innocent, others might see it as crossing a line. What matters most is how you perceive it and what it means for your sense of security in the relationship. When trying to decide whether to stay or break up, start by reflecting on your core values and boundaries. What does loyalty mean to you? What kind of physical or emotional closeness with others outside the relationship is acceptable? This isn't about judging him by external standards, but by *your own*. Is this a deal-breaker for you, or is it something that, with effort and clear communication, your relationship can overcome? Consider the context: Was this a one-time lapse in judgment, possibly fueled by stress as you mentioned, or does it hint at a deeper pattern of boundary issues? His immediate regret and confession are positive signs that he understands he made a mistake and values your trust. This opens the door for a difficult but necessary conversation. Talk about what happened, how it made you feel, and what steps he's willing to take to rebuild your trust. This might involve setting clearer boundaries for future interactions, discussing what intimacy means to both of you, or even seeking professional guidance if the emotional fallout is significant. Rebuilding trust, if you choose to stay, is a journey. It won't happen overnight. It requires consistent effort from both sides – his willingness to be transparent and accountable, and your willingness to process your feelings and observe his actions over time. Think about whether you genuinely believe he can change or adjust his behavior to align with your expectations for the relationship. Can you forgive him and move past this, or will it constantly resurface and erode your peace of mind? On the other hand, if you decide to break up, it's not a sign of weakness but a recognition of your own needs and boundaries. Sometimes, even with love, certain actions can fundamentally shift the foundation of a relationship beyond repair. The decision to stay or leave a relationship is deeply personal, and there's no universal right or wrong answer. Listen to your gut feeling, weigh the pros and cons, and remember that your emotional well-being is paramount. Whatever path you choose, make sure it’s one that honors your self-respect and paves the way for your future happiness.

Tbh I personally would dump him. They say the chances of someone cheating again goes through the roof if someone does it even once. Plus, it’s a self respect thing too. 🤷🏻‍♀️ You’ll always be afraid of him doing something as long as you’re together. I would never put myself through that!
