Gospel for today: John 7:1-2, 10, 25-30

Gospel for today according to Saint John

John 7:1-2, 10, 25-30

Jesus moved about within Galilee;

he did not wish to travel in Judea,

because the Jews were trying to kill him.

But the Jewish feast of Tabernacles was near.

But when his brothers had gone up to the feast,

he himself also went up, not openly but as it were in secret.

Some of the inhabitants of Jerusalem said,

"Is he not the one they are trying to kill?

And look, he is speaking openly and they say nothing to him.

Could the authorities have realized that he is the Christ?

But we know where he is from.

When the Christ comes, no one will know where he is from."

So Jesus cried out in the temple area as he was teaching and said,

"You know me and also know where I am from.

Yet I did not come on my own,

but the one who sent me, whom you do not know, is true.

I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me."

So they tried to arrest him,

but no one laid a hand upon him,

because his hour had not yet come.

... Read moreWow, reading through JOHN 7:1-2, 10, 25-30 today in the GOSPEL FOR TODAY really hit home. It’s such a powerful snapshot of Jesus’ life, showing his incredible courage and wisdom amidst growing danger. I found myself reflecting on how Jesus navigated hostile territory, specifically heading to the Feast of Tabernacles. This isn't just any trip; it's a journey during a time when Jewish leaders seek to kill him. Imagine the tension! The Feast of Tabernacles was one of the most important annual pilgrimages, a time of national celebration and spiritual reflection in Jerusalem. For Jesus to go, especially after initially saying he wouldn't, and then going in secret, shows a deliberate, strategic move guided by divine purpose, not human fear. It highlights how Jesus moves cautiously but never backs down from his mission. He knew his hour had not yet come, and he trusted God's perfect timing. What struck me most was how the people are divided in Jerusalem. Some recognized his authority and wondered if he was the Christ, marveling that he spoke so openly without being arrested. Others scoffed, believing they knew his origins and thus he couldn't be the Messiah, whose origins were thought to be mysterious. This whole discussion about Messiah's origins is so central to understanding Jesus. He openly declares, "You know me and also know where I am from. Yet I did not come on my own, but the one who sent me, whom you do not know, is true. I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me." This isn't just a geographical statement; it’s Jesus affirming that he was sent by God, a profound declaration of his divine nature. This passage is a powerful reminder that following Christ often brings challenges. Like Jesus, we might face questions, misunderstandings, or even opposition when we live out our faith. It can be tempting to shy away from proclaiming truth or living authentically when it feels risky. But Jesus' example here teaches us to trust God's timing above all else. He didn't rush into conflict, nor did he avoid his mission. He waited until his time has not yet come to fully confront his accusers, yet he seized the perfect moment to teach and reveal truth. It makes me think about moments in my own life when I've wanted to push ahead or, conversely, hide away out of fear. This GOSPEL FOR TODAY truly encourages me to discern God's will and timing, rather than relying on my own. Many misunderstood Jesus then, just as people do today. The division seen in JOHN 7 isn't just a historical event; it's a timeless struggle of faith versus skepticism, and understanding versus prejudice. Even in later verses of JOHN 7 (like 40-53, though not fully discussed here), we see this division deepen, with some wanting to seize him and others defending him. Ultimately, this scripture calls us to seek a deeper understanding of who Jesus truly is, beyond superficial assumptions. It’s about recognizing His divine authority and trusting the path He has laid out, even when it means navigating challenges with caution and courage, knowing that God’s plan will unfold in its perfect time. What a powerful message to carry into my day!
