Jn 14:27-31a

The powerful message from John 14:27-31a truly offers a unique kind of comfort, especially in these uncertain times. Jesus tells us, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” This verse has personally helped me navigate moments of anxiety, reminding me that there's a deeper peace available than anything the world can offer. Many of us search for ways to overcome fear, and this passage is a cornerstone. When Jesus says, "Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid," He's addressing the kind of worldly fear that paralyzes us. This is different from the fear of God often mentioned in scripture, which isn't about terror but profound reverence, awe, and respect for His immense power and holiness. Jesus gives us a peace that calms our earthly anxieties, allowing us to approach God with love and trust, rather than dread. The OCR also powerfully highlights, "WE'RE ENCOURAGED TO LIVE IN FAITH, NOT FEAR," reinforcing this crucial distinction. Jesus also speaks of His return: “I am going away and I will come back to you.” This promise is profoundly linked to the concept of He is risen. While John 14:27-31a speaks of His immediate departure and future return, the resurrection is the ultimate proof that His promises are true and that the 'ruler of the world' indeed has no power over Him. Knowing Jesus has already defeated the enemy through His resurrection gives us immense hope. It means that the peace He offers isn't fleeting; it's rooted in an eternal victory that assures us God is in control. The journey of faith also comes to mind when considering John 20:29, which states, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” In our passage, Jesus says, “And now I have told you this before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe.” This shows a progression. Initially, His disciples would believe when they saw His words fulfilled. But true, mature faith, as highlighted in John 20:29, is about trusting Him even when we can't see the full picture or the outcome. It's about maintaining FAITH WILL REMAIN STRONG WHEN EVENTS UNFOLD, even in moments of doubt or waiting. This deeper trust is essential for experiencing His lasting peace. Finally, the entire essence of Jesus’ offering in this passage is a testament to grace. His peace is a gift, A PEACE UNLIKE WHAT THE WORLD OFFERS, freely given, not earned. His obedience to the Father, His demonstration of love, and His sacrifice are all acts of immeasurable grace. It's through this grace that we can receive His peace, overcome our fears, and cultivate a steadfast faith, trusting that GOD IS IN CONTROL of our lives, even WHEN LIFE FEELS UNCERTAIN. Embracing this divine peace allows us to live with a hopeful heart, knowing our future is secured in His hands.
