Matthew 19:13-15

Reading Matthew 19:13-15 always makes me pause and reflect on my own faith journey. It's such a beautiful and powerful moment when parents brought their little children to Jesus so He could lay His hands on them and pray. What strikes me most is the reaction of the disciples. They tried to stop them, probably thinking they were protecting Jesus from distraction or that children weren't important enough for His time. But Jesus, in His infinite wisdom and love, rebuked the disciples, saying, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these.” This isn't just a sweet story about Jesus loving kids; it's a profound commentary on the nature of God's Kingdom and how we are meant to approach our faith. The OCR text beautifully highlights that children represent innocence, dependence, and openness to receive love. These are qualities that Jesus shows are essential to entering the Kingdom of Heaven. As adults, we often complicate things, thinking we need to earn our way or understand everything perfectly. But Jesus points us to the humility and trust of a child. Think about it: a child naturally depends on their parents for everything. They trust without question, they are openness to receive love, and they approach the world with a sense of wonder and purity. They don't have preconceived notions or a lifetime of biases. This childlike trust is what Jesus calls us to. It’s a reminder that we don't need to be theologians or perfect to be worthy of God's love. The OCR says no one is too small, unimportant, or unworthy. God's Kingdom is open to those who come with the humility, trust, and purity of a child. For me, this passage is a personal challenge. How often do I try to control outcomes, rely on my own understanding, or let pride get in the way of simply trusting God? It encourages me to shed the complexities of adulthood and return to a simpler, more dependent faith. When I face doubts or difficulties, I try to remember the innocence and straightforward trust of a child reaching out to their loving parent. Jesus didn't just bless the children; He placed His hands on them and blessed them, signifying acceptance and grace. He wants us to come to Him just as we are, with open hearts. This passage reminds us that God's Kingdom is open to those who come with that sincere childlike trust. It's a call to approach our faith with childlike trust, to remember that in God's eyes, every soul is precious and welcomed, and to strive to be more like Jesus, who taught us to guide others toward Christ rather than being obstacles. What a powerful lesson for today!
