Gospel for today:
Luke 17:5-10

Gospel for today according to Saint Luke

Luke 17:5-10

The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith."

The Lord replied,

"If you have faith the size of a mustard seed,

you would say to this mulberry tree,

'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you.

"Who among you would say to your servant

who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field,

'Come here immediately and take your place at table'?

Would he not rather say to him,

'Prepare something for me to eat.

Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink.

You may eat and drink when I am finished'?

Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded?

So should it be with you.

When you have done all you have been commanded,

say, 'We are unprofitable servants;

we have done what we were obliged to do.'"

... Read moreThe passage from Luke 17:5-10 offers a rich teaching on the nature of faith and humility in Christian life. The apostles’ request for increased faith highlights a common human desire: to grow spiritually and to trust God more deeply in daily challenges. Jesus’ response emphasizes that even faith as small as a mustard seed—the tiniest seed—can accomplish great things. This metaphor encourages believers to trust in the power of God despite their perceived limitations. The message about commanding a mulberry tree to uproot and plant itself in the sea illustrates that faith in God can defy natural expectations and produce miraculous outcomes. It reminds us that faith is not about the quantity but the quality—small, genuine faith trusting God can have transformative effects. The latter part of the passage shifts focus to servanthood and humility. Jesus uses the example of a servant who, after working hard in the field, is not immediately given honor but rather expected to continue serving. This teaches that Christian service should be done without expecting special recognition or gratitude. The phrase "We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do" calls believers to humility, to recognize that serving God and others is a duty rather than a favor. In real-life application, this passage reminds us that faith and service go hand in hand. Walking in faith involves trusting God daily, even in small matters, while embracing humility in how we serve others. The OCR content highlights themes such as "faith to accomplish great things," "living with humility," and "faithfully serve with gratitude, trusting God," which further reinforce the core messages. By reflecting on Luke 17:5-10, Christians can be encouraged to nurture their faith without discouragement and to serve selflessly, recognizing that their true reward comes from God. This teaching calls all believers to a life of trust, perseverance, and humble obedience—qualities that are essential for spiritual growth and for impactful Christian living today.
