Mark 4:21-25

Gospel for today according to Mark

4:21-25

Jesus said to his disciples,

“Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket

or under a bed,

and not to be placed on a lampstand?

For there is nothing hidden except to be made visible;

nothing is secret except to come to light.

Anyone who has ears to hear ought to hear.”

He also told them, “Take care what you hear.

The measure with which you measure will be measured out to you,

and still more will be given to you.

To the one who has, more will be given;

from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”

The imagery of a lamp not being hidden but placed on a stand reminds me of the importance of openly sharing and living out our beliefs. It’s like carrying a light that illuminates not only our path but also serves as guidance to others. In practical terms, this teaches us that keeping our faith private can limit spiritual growth, whereas expressing it boldly can bring greater understanding and blessings. Additionally, Jesus’ warning to ‘take care what you hear’ resonates deeply in today’s information-rich world. It’s a reminder to discern the messages we accept and how we respond to them. The promise that ‘the measure with which you measure will be measured out to you’ challenges me personally to approach life with generosity and attentiveness. When I focus on listening and living by godly principles, I find I receive more insight and peace. This passage also highlights the dynamic nature of spiritual growth—the idea that those who embrace and act on God’s word will see their faith deepen, while neglect or casualness can result in loss. From experience, I’ve noticed that periods of actively studying and practicing spiritual teachings bring clarity and purpose, much like light gradually brightens a room. In essence, Mark 4:21-25 is an invitation to live openly and faithfully, to safely share the light we've been given, and to be mindful of the spiritual truths we absorb and reflect. This teaching encourages a lifestyle where faith is visible and transformative, not hidden or dormant.
