Matthew 9:14-15

Gospel for today according to Matthew

Matthew 9:14-15

The disciples of John approached Jesus and said,

“Why do we and the Pharisees fast much,

but your disciples do not fast?”

Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests mourn

as long as the bridegroom is with them?

The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them,

and then they will fast.”

... Read moreReflecting on Matthew 9:14-15, I’ve come to appreciate how Jesus’ metaphor of the wedding guests and bridegroom beautifully captures the balance between joy and spiritual discipline. In my own faith journey, I've noticed that fasting often feels like a heavy obligation until I understand its deeper significance. Jesus highlights that fasting isn’t just a ritual but is deeply connected to the presence of Christ—the bridegroom. When He is with us, it is a time of celebration, rejoicing in the fulfillment of God’s promises. This passage reminds us that spiritual practices like fasting gain true meaning when they stem from a relationship with Christ, rather than being mere routines. The disciples of John and Pharisees fasted often, adhering to traditional expectations. However, Jesus’ followers were living in a new era of joy because the Messiah was present with them. In my experience, this teaching shaped how I approach fasting today. It’s less about following rules and more about aligning my heart with God’s timing and presence. While fasting is a way to deepen prayer and seek God’s guidance, Jesus promises that there will be appropriate times when fasting expresses longing—for when the bridegroom is 'taken away'—a metaphor for times of spiritual longing and preparation. This passage also encourages believers to embrace both celebration in God’s presence and seasons of longing or repentance. Understanding this dynamic helped me find peace in my spiritual rhythms, seeing fasting as an intimate response to God’s presence and absence. By meditating on this passage regularly and witnessing its truths in my life, I encourage others to see fasting not as a burdensome command but as part of a joyful relationship with Christ, marked by celebration and meaningful preparation.
