Matthew 23:1-12

Gospel for today according to Matthew

Matthew 23:1-12

Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying,

"The scribes and the Pharisees

have taken their seat on the chair of Moses.

Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you,

but do not follow their example.

For they preach but they do not practice.

They tie up heavy burdens hard to carry

and lay them on people's shoulders,

but they will not lift a finger to move them.

All their works are performed to be seen.

They widen their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels.

They love places of honor at banquets, seats of honor in synagogues,

greetings in marketplaces, and the salutation 'Rabbi.'

As for you, do not be called 'Rabbi.'

You have but one teacher, and you are all brothers.

Call no one on earth your father;

you have but one Father in heaven.

Do not be called 'Master';

you have but one master, the Christ.

The greatest among you must be your servant.

Whoever exalts himself will be humbled;

but whoever humbles himself will be exalted."

... Read moreReflecting on Matthew 23:1-12, I find it sobering how relevant Jesus' words remain today. The passage calls out the scribes and Pharisees for preaching rules without living them, placing heavy burdens upon others yet not offering help. This reminds me of times in my own life when I’ve encountered people or situations where appearances mattered more than genuine care or action. One key takeaway for me is the emphasis on humility — "The greatest among you must be your servant." This challenges the common pursuit of status or recognition, urging us instead to prioritize service and kindness. In my experience volunteering at community events, I’ve seen how true leadership isn’t about titles but about listening, supporting, and lifting others up quietly. Additionally, the instruction not to call anyone 'Rabbi' or 'Master' echoes the idea of equality among believers, recognizing one true Teacher and Father. This encourages me to maintain humility and avoid elevating others—or myself—beyond our shared humanity. The imagery of the Pharisees widening their phylacteries and lengthening tassels to be noticed is a vivid reminder of how outward signs can sometimes mask inward shortcomings. It prompts me to self-reflect on the importance of aligning my actions with my values and avoiding hollow displays. Overall, this scripture challenges me daily to practice what I preach, bear burdens alongside others, and foster genuine community founded on humility and service. When I meditate on these verses, I am inspired to live a more intentional and compassionate life, seeking to uplift rather than exalt myself.
