Work and school
#lemon8diarychallenge second day of my internship ✨ also had class in between, learning the balance of work, school and rasing a 3 year old #watchmakemydreamscometrue ✨
It's so easy to feel overwhelmed when you're pulling work and school double duty, especially with family responsibilities on top. I totally get it – that feeling of trying to keep all the plates spinning while navigating an internship, classes, and parenting a lively 3-year-old is a daily reality for so many of us. The exhaustion from keeping up with assignments and managing a demanding workload can feel constant, but there are ways to make it more manageable. One of the first things I learned (the hard way!) is that good time management isn't just about scheduling; it's about being strategic. My secret weapon? A digital calendar where everything goes – internship hours, class times, assignment deadlines, and even dedicated 'toddler time' and self-care slots. Color-coding helps me visualize my week and spot potential conflicts before they become crises. I also try to block out 'focus time' for studying, even if it's just 30 minutes during my child's nap or after they're asleep. Breaking down large assignments into smaller, manageable chunks makes them feel less daunting and prevents me from falling behind. It's tempting to try and do it all, but that's a fast track to burnout. I've had to get honest with myself about what's truly essential. Prioritizing tasks based on urgency and importance (the Eisenhower Matrix is a lifesaver!) helps immensely. And sometimes, you just have to say no – whether it's to an extra project or another social engagement – to protect your most valuable resource: your time and energy. This helps prevent that crushing feeling of struggle. The queries about flexible working schedules really hit home. If your job offers it, embrace it! Being able to adjust my hours even slightly, or work remotely a few days, makes a HUGE difference in managing childcare drop-offs/pick-ups or unexpected sick days. Don't be afraid to discuss options with your employer; many are understanding, especially when they see your commitment. For school, exploring online classes or hybrid formats can also provide that much-needed wiggle room, helping you juggle school, practice, and a part-time job if you have them. You absolutely cannot do it alone. Lean on your village! This could be family helping with childcare, friends offering emotional support, or study groups at school. I've found incredible strength in connecting with other student-parents who 'get it.' Sharing tips and frustrations makes the journey feel less isolating. Don't forget school resources like academic advisors or counseling services if you're feeling overwhelmed or falling behind on assignments – they're there to help. It sounds cliché, but self-care isn't selfish; it's essential for sustainability. When you're constantly on work and school double duty, exhaustion is a real threat. Even small things make a difference: a 15-minute walk, listening to a favorite podcast, or just enjoying a cup of tea in peace. I try to make sure I get enough sleep, as hard as that can be, because everything else falls apart if I'm running on empty. Remember, you're doing an amazing job juggling so much; be kind to yourself through the process.
