books that ruined me!

… for the better!

📕The Defining Decade by Meg Jay - This book was the reason I quit my job at 25 & moved across the country to start a new life. Best decision EVER!

📗Atomic Habits by James Clear - I always gave up on my goals once reaching a certain point until I read this book. It helped to give me small, easy steps to make big changes in my life!

📘All About Love by bell hooks - Picked this up on a whim and I’m so happy I did! Plus, the last person I gifted this to ended up married less than a year after reading it! I’m just saying… 👀

I’m currently on the hunt for more life-changing books to read. I’m aiming to read at least one book a month. PLEASE send me any recs of books I cannot go another year without reading! #books #lemon8bookclub #bookreccomendation #booktok #lifestylechanges

... Read moreWhen I first picked up Meg Jay's 'The Defining Decade,' I honestly wasn't expecting it to be the catalyst for such a massive shift in my life. But this book isn't just another self-help guide; it’s a wake-up call, especially if you're navigating your twenties and wondering how to make the most of them now. Jay, a clinical psychologist, argues compellingly that your twenties are a critical developmental period, not just an extended adolescence. It’s the time to build what she calls 'identity capital' – investments you make in yourself that increase your worth. This could be anything from gaining new skills to taking on challenging jobs that might not pay much but teach you a lot. For me, realizing the importance of building this capital was a huge 'aha!' moment. Before reading it, I felt a vague sense of unease about my career path, but I was comfortable. 'The Defining Decade' made me question if 'comfortable' was enough for such a pivotal period. It pushed me to consider whether my current job was truly contributing to my long-term goals or just keeping me stagnant. Jay talks about 'weak ties' – those acquaintances or connections outside your immediate circle that often lead to new opportunities. This concept resonated deeply when I was contemplating my move. It wasn't my closest friends who offered new perspectives or job leads in a different city, but rather a former colleague I hadn't spoken to in ages. This book isn't about rushing into marriage or a high-powered career, but about making intentional choices and avoiding the 'drift' that can define this decade. One of the most impactful messages for me was understanding that seemingly small decisions in your twenties can have significant ripple effects down the line. It's about being proactive rather than passive. The book empowered me to take that leap – to quit my stable job and move across the country to start fresh. It wasn't a sudden, impulsive decision, but one born from a profound understanding of what I wanted to build for my future, guided by Jay’s insights on why your twenties matter. The sense of freedom and purpose I found after making that move was incredible, and I truly believe I wouldn't have had the courage without the framework this book provided. So, if you’re in your twenties, or even approaching them, and feel a bit lost or unsure, I cannot recommend 'The Defining Decade' enough. It’s a powerful reminder that you are actively creating your future right now. Don't let anyone tell you this decade doesn't count. It’s the perfect time to experiment, learn, and consciously shape the person you want to become. Think about what 'identity capital' you want to build, cultivate your 'weak ties,' and embrace intentional living. It’s about taking ownership of your path, recognizing the incredible potential of this time, and making choices that truly align with your aspirations. This book truly ruined my old perspective, but in the most beautiful, life-affirming way possible.
