I didn’t get into the dietetic internship the first time I applied — and here’s why:

I’m sharing this not to dwell on the past, but to show that rejection can be one of the best teachers. If you’re in this process now, I hope this helps you learn from my mistakes:

📉 Low Science GPA & Low Nutrition GPA

I struggled with my science and nutrition classes more than I expected. I didn’t fully realize how much weight these courses carried in the application process, and it cost me.

⏳ Last-Minute Application

I procrastinated. I left everything too late — my personal statement, gathering materials, organizing my thoughts. Rushing through something this important didn’t allow me to put my best foot forward.

📝 Strong Rec Letters, but Not Enough to Carry Me

I had great mentors who wrote kind, thoughtful recommendation letters. But those alone aren’t enough to outweigh other weaknesses in the application.

🤝 Volunteer & Work Experience in Nutrition

I had some solid hands-on experience, but I didn’t take the time to reflect on what I learned or how it shaped me as a future dietitian — especially in my personal statement.

📄 Weak Personal Statement

This was a huge factor. I didn’t tell my story clearly or confidently. I didn’t connect my past experiences to my future goals in a way that felt compelling or authentic.

👀 Didn’t Ask for Feedback

One of the biggest mistakes I made was not asking others to review my application. A fresh pair of eyes could have caught what I missed — unclear writing, typos, or even just ideas that didn’t make sense.

Not getting in felt like a personal failure at the time — but now I see it was just a step I needed to take. When I applied again, I came back stronger, more intentional, and more self-aware.

To anyone in this process: be honest with yourself, give yourself time, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. You can get there — even if it takes a detour first. 💛
