Italian Tomato Sauce recipe 🍝 🫶

🍝 Ingredients 🍅

- 1lb pasta

- 28oz can of Cento San Marzano peeled tomatoes

- 6oz can tomato paste

- 3/4 cup water

- 1 sweet onion, minced

- 4 cloves of minced garlic

- 2 tbsp olive oil

- 3 tbsp unsalted butter

- 1 handful of fresh chopped basil

- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

- salt (Himalayan sea salt if available)

- fresh cracked pepper

- red pepper flakes

- Trader Joe’s aglio olio seasoning or Italian seasoning

- garlic powder

- sugar

- 1/8 cup heavy cream optional

📝 Instructions ✏️

- bring a pot to medium heat, add olive oil

- add finely chopped sweet onion and cook until translucent about 5 minutes

- season the onions with black pepper, red pepper flakes and a pinch of sugar, cook additional 3 minutes

- add 2 tbsp butter

- add minced garlic and cook until fragrant about 1 minute

- add can of tomato paste, water, garlic powder, fresh basil and Italian seasoning

- stir and cook for 2 minutes until slightly bubbling and tomato paste is well incorporated

- add can of San marzano peeled tomatoes and bring to a simmer

- once simmering, add additional tbsp butter, bring heat to low and let simmer covered 30min-3 hours (longer the better!)

- at this point I like to take an emersion blender and blend the sauce *slightly* not fully, so it’s a bit more smooth (skip this if you like chunky sauce)

- taste and add more seasonings, salt, pepper, red pepper flakes, garlic powder, sugar, etc.

- add parmesean cheese

- optionally add a bit of cream for a smooth texture and less acidity

- serve over your favorite pasta and save leftovers for pizza or a chicken parm!

Start with authentic San Marzano tomatoes, known for their sweetness and low acidity, which helps in achieving a rich flavor. Utilize fresh aromatics such as sweet onions and garlic, sautéed in olive oil to build a classic flavor base. Don’t forget the role of herbs; fresh basil enhances the sauce's aroma and taste. When simmering, longer cook times not only deepen flavors but allow the ingredients to meld together beautifully. Consider blending the sauce lightly for a smooth texture, but a chunkier style can also be delightful for those who enjoy a heartier sauce. For added creaminess, a dash of heavy cream can transform your sauce’s texture, balancing the acidity of the tomatoes. Remember to adjust the seasoning accordingly; Himalayan sea salt and fresh cracked pepper can elevate your dish. This sauce isn’t just a pasta companion; it also makes an excellent base for pizza or chicken Parmesan. Whether you’re serving a family dinner or hosting friends, this sauce strikes the perfect balance between simplicity and gourmet taste. Explore variations by adding spices or incorporating vegetables for a unique twist. Perfect for weeknight meals or special gatherings, this recipe is sure to impress!
