Getting back into running after 20 years!

Not terrible for getting back in the game after about 20 years. Starting slow, twice a week 1 mile for now. Hips hurt pretty bad after each run. Weight training 3x a week and Pilates 2x a week. If yall have any recs on getting my hips to not hurt so bad let me know!

... Read moreGetting back into running after a long break is a commendable step toward improving overall health and fitness. Starting slow, especially with just one mile twice a week, allows your body to gradually adapt to the new demands. Hip pain is a common issue, especially after a long hiatus, often caused by muscle tightness, weak hip stabilizers, or improper running form. To manage and reduce hip pain, consider incorporating dynamic warm-ups before each run, such as leg swings and hip circles to improve mobility. Stretching tight muscles like the iliotibial band, hip flexors, and glutes post-run can also relieve discomfort. Strengthening exercises focusing on the glute medius, core, and hip abductors will enhance stability and reduce joint strain. Since weight training and Pilates are part of your routine, ensure these workouts target hip strength and flexibility effectively. Pilates particularly helps in improving core stability and balancing muscle imbalances that contribute to hip pain. Additionally, pay attention to your running shoes; wearing supportive and well-cushioned footwear that suits your gait can prevent excessive hip stress. Cross-training activities like cycling or swimming can maintain cardiovascular fitness while giving your hips time to recover. Lastly, listen to your body and avoid pushing through intense pain. Gradually increasing mileage and intensity while incorporating rest days can help you build endurance safely. Consulting a physical therapist or running coach might provide personalized guidance and form correction, further minimizing hip issues on your running comeback journey.

My best advice is to start slow and run/walk 2-3 times a week! Slowly decrease your walking amount each time and increase your running amount! I struggled getting my first 2-4 miles but I was going out way too fast so my body got too tired too early. It’s also good to establish goals. Do you want t
