Lao Gan Ma Chee Cheong Fun is the bomb

Lao Gan Ma with Chee Cheong Fun or rice noodle rolls sounded like a not-so-interesting combo to me. Isn’t it just a spicier version of Chee Cheong Fun? Even the dish didn’t look very appealing at first. But I was wrong. The moment I took the first bite of it, I just can’t stop. My partner and I finished the whole plate within minutes. It was that good.

I had no idea that their Miso Lao Gan Ma carbonara sauce was a burst of flavours in the mouth. The main character was the sauce and the Chee Cheong Fun is an extra; a carb to fill you up. But it still plays an important role as it soaks up all the sauce really well.

The dish itself is a 9 out of 10. It would have been a 10 out 10 if the Chee Cheong Fun was softer and silkier. @surreyhillsgrocer.sg has been coming up with several innovative dishes that actually worked. People head there for the vibes but I head there for their quirky dish creations.

Another dish worth mentioning is the black glutinous rice desserts. The almond crumble gave it that nice crunch. As you’ve guessed it, we wiped the plate cleaned for this dessert too.

What makes this dish stand out is its innovative use of Lao Gan Ma's famous chili crisp in a fusion-style carbonara sauce, delivering a burst of savory and spicy flavors. The Chee Cheong Fun, traditionally a soft and silky rice noodle roll, acts as the perfect canvas, absorbing the rich sauce beautifully. When dining at Surrey Hills Grocer, make sure to visit their Raffles City outlet, as this dish is exclusive to that location. Besides the main dish, I highly recommend ending your meal with their Black Glutinous Rice dessert — the almond crumble topping adds a pleasant crunch and balances the flavors nicely. From my experience, the key to enjoying this plate fully is to savor the interplay between the spicy, tangy sauce and the mild, chewy noodles. Although I wished for even softer rice rolls, the dish still scored a solid 9 out of 10 for me. If you like trying dishes that push the boundaries of traditional Asian flavors with contemporary culinary creativity, this is an excellent choice. Don’t forget to check out other innovative dishes like their 'Very Boring But Delicious Salad' and Laksa Shakshuka, which offer equally surprising flavor combinations. Surrey Hills Grocer is the perfect spot if you’re looking for a place that combines cool vibes with quirky, thoughtfully crafted dishes. Give these a try and you’ll find yourself wanting to revisit frequently for new discoveries!
