Changes Since the 1980s, the urban area of Abu Dhabi has undergone significant expansion from a compact core to a vast metropolitan area. In the early 1980s, the city was mainly concentrated in the central area of the island, with limited space, dominated by government agencies and core residential areas.
Entering the 1990s, with the prosperity of the oil economy, the city began to expand towards the edges of the island, while constructing sea-crossing bridges to connect surrounding land areas, such as the development of the Mussafah industrial zone.
At the beginning of the 21st century, Abu Dhabi formulated the "2030 Urban Development Plan" to promote urban modernization and sustainable development. Since then, urban expansion has been rapid, with land reclamation and the development of new districts becoming routine, such as the construction of Saadiyat Island, Yas Island, and others, leading to a rapid increase in urban area and functional zones.
