Sudan Gezira Agricultural Project
(Partial) The economy of Sudan is based on agriculture and animal husbandry, with the most important agricultural area in the country being the "peninsula" (Gezira) region between the White and Blue Nile Rivers, extending to Khartoum.
More than half of the national population and 80% of the arable land are in this area. This is one of the oldest irrigation projects in the world, aiming to use the natural flow of water and terrain to distribute water sources into artificial canals, running through the entire planting area.
The color changes of circular fields show crop rotation, a method of planting different crops in the same area across seasons to protect soil health and optimize yields. Cotton is the main crop here, but rotating with other crops helps maintain the productivity of the land year after year.
