🇹🇳Carthage: From a Great Mediterranean Port to a City Hidden in Plain Sight

Carthage in the Past (300 BC)

The most striking feature in the image is the Cothon harbor, a unique and famous circular port. The harbor was divided into two sections: a commercial port and a hidden military port for its navy. The Cothon was a symbol of Carthage's wealth and naval might, which rivaled Rome at the time.

The Carthaginians were a seafaring people of Phoenician origin, skilled in trade and navigation. They built a vast trading empire that spanned across Southern Europe and North Africa. However, their rivalry with the Roman Republic led to the long and destructive Punic Wars.

Carthage Today (2023)
