This set the stage for its legendary industrial base.
The Big Unification: "Greater Foshan" Rises (1990s-2000s)
This was the era of "The Fission of the Five Tigers" followed by "the Reconstruction of Greater Foshan."
1992-1994: Shunde, Nanhai, Sanshui, and Gaoming all upgraded from counties to cities.
2002: The State Council approved the abolition of these county-level cities, finally unifying the five districts and officially surging the area to 3797 \text{ km}^2.
Key infrastructure solidified this new structure:
2006: The "First Ring" expressway opened, connecting the skeletons of the four major districts.
2007: Construction began on the Guangfo Metro, a national pioneer for intercity lines!
The Manufacturing Giant (2010s - Present)
The "Strong Center" strategy has driven a continuous spatial revolution:
2019: The city's GDP broke the trillion mark.
2022: The built-up area expanded to 189 \text{ km}^2.
New Plan: The central city expanded further, annexing Beijiao, Chencun, and Dali to reach an area of 600 \text{ km}^2!
