Have you ever seen red lightning go into space? 🌌
Most recently, astronauts on the ISS 🛰️ successfully captured a great atmospheric phenomenon called "Sprite," which occurs over thunderstorms in Mexico and the southern United States.
❓ Sprite?
It's a giant electric discharge that occurs high above a thunderstorm cloud ⚡, sometimes soaring into the high-altitude atmosphere to nearly 80 kilometers (50 miles)!
What makes it special is that, unlike the common lightning we are used to, sprites appear as bright red flashes 🔴 or as branching structures soaring into space above. This phenomenon is classified as Transient Luminous Events - TLEs.
👀 Why is it so rare?
Sprite observations from the earth are very difficult because they occur only in the blink of an eye and at a very high altitude. Having astronauts on the ISS observe from a "look down" perspective above the atmosphere is a golden opportunity to see this beautiful global image. 📸
🔬 Now scientists are seriously studying these phenomena to better understand the Earth's electrical system, atmospheric chemistry, and the reaction between the weather and the upper atmosphere.
This picture confirms that ISS is not only a sky lab, but also the most excellent "scenic spot" for observing rare natural phenomena on our planet, 🌍✨
