The leap in AI growth is causing the demand for electricity to soar so dramatically that some large data centers reportedly use electricity equivalent to "medium-sized cities" (about 40,000 people). 🏙️💡
Most recently, in New Jersey, U.S.A., a group of dozens of local organizations began calling on state leaders to suspend or restrict the construction of a new Data Center because of concerns about drawing huge amounts of electricity, water use, and the impact on the city's environment and infrastructure. 🛑
🤔 Why does AI eat fire so much?
Modern AI systems, especially large language models (LLMs), require the ultimate processing power. These data centers are filled with thousands of high-performance GPU chips and servers that run 24 hours a day. What follows is "enormous heat," 🔥 requiring a cooling system that consumes a lot of fire and water.

📉 Worried Parties: Sees the rapid expansion of the Data Center could make power bills more expensive, electricity infrastructure overworked and affect water resources
📈 Support: See AI infrastructure as the strategic key to economic growth and reinforce technology leadership.
This is the reality in the AI era that we are inevitable..."Digital intelligence" needs to rely hugely on "infrastructure" and "energy" in the real world.

ในฐานะคนที่ติดตามเทคโนโลยี AI มาอย่างใกล้ชิด ผมมองเห็นว่าเรื่องการใช้พลังงานของ AI เป็นประเด็นที่คนทั่วไปอาจยังไม่ค่อยรู้มากนัก แม้ AI จะเปลี่ยนโลก เร่งการพัฒนาและสร้างโอกาสใหม่ๆ แต่เบื้องหลังความฉลาดนั้น คือการใช้ไฟฟ้าปริมาณมหาศาลที่ศูนย์ข้อมูลต้องจ่าย ผมเคยอ่านรายงานและศึกษากรณีศูนย์ข้อมูลหลายแห่งซึ่งต้องใช้ชิป GPU และเซิร์ฟเวอร์ทำงานหนักตลอด 24 ชั่วโมง ซึ่งนอกจากจะกินไฟจำนวนมากแล้ว ยังต้องมีระบบทำความเย็นเพื่อควบคุมความร้อนที่เกิดขึ้นด้วย นั่นทำให้ทั้งค่าไฟและการใช้น้ำเพิ่มขึ้นตามไปด้วย เป็นภาระที่เมืองหลายๆ แห่งเริ่มตระหนักและกังวล จากประสบการณ์ของผม การใช้พลังงานในระดับนี้ไม่เพียงส่งผลกระทบด้านค่าไฟที่อาจสูงขึ้นเท่านั้น แต่ยังสะท้อนถึงการบริหารจัดการทรัพยากรธรรมชาติที่อาจไม่ยั่งยืนในอนาคตด้วย เมื่อเทียบกับประโยชน์ที่ได้จาก AI เช่น การเพิ่มประสิทธิภาพการทำงาน การช่วยวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลเชิงลึก หรือแม้แต่การพัฒนาเทคโนโลยีใหม่ๆ ผมคิดว่าถ้าเราสามารถหาวิธีทำให้ Data Center ใช้พลังงานอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพมากขึ้น หรือพัฒนาเซิร์ฟเวอร์ที่ประหยัดไฟมากกว่าเดิม ก็จะช่วยแก้ปัญหานี้ได้อย่างมาก นอกจากนี้ การเลือกใช้พลังงานสะอาด เช่น พลังงานแสงอาทิตย์หรือพลังงานลมร่วมกับ Data Center ก็เป็นแนวทางที่ควรสนับสนุน เพื่อให้เทคโนโลยี AI ก้าวไปพร้อมกับการรักษาสิ่งแวดล้อมอย่างสมดุล สำหรับผู้ที่สนใจร่วมแลกเปลี่ยนความเห็น ผมว่าการพูดคุยเรื่องนี้เป็นเรื่องสำคัญที่จะช่วยผลักดันให้เกิดการพัฒนาอย่างยั่งยืนต่อไปในยุค AI นี้ สุดท้ายนี้ ผมอยากชวนให้ทุกคนลองคิดว่า "ความฉลาดทางดิจิทัล" ที่เรามีในยุคนี้ คุ้มค่าพลังงานและทรัพยากรที่เราเสียไปหรือไม่ และทำอย่างไรให้ความก้าวหน้าทาง AI เป็นไปอย่างสมดุล ไม่ทำลายสิ่งแวดล้อมและทรัพยากรธรรมชาติ เพราะถ้าเทคโนโลยีไม่มีความยั่งยืน เราอาจต้องจ่ายค่าราคาที่สูงกว่านั้นในระยะยาวครับ
