Sunless city 6 months! Norway creates' giant mirror 'reflecting sunlight down valley ☀️🪞
This is one of the coolest examples when "engineering" integrates into enhancing people's "quality of life"! 🇳🇴🏔️
Do you know? In Norway, there are cities in deep valleys, where during the winter, the topography and degrees of the sun leave the entire city almost unexposed to sunlight for six months!
Instead of moving away from the darkness, engineers took the idea of a huge computer-controlled "Heliostat mirrors" on a hilltop that towers above the village. 💻✨
What is its mechanism of action?
🪞 These mirrors rotate and adjust degrees, tracking the sun's motion throughout the day.
☀️ then acts to reflect natural sunlight, including a beam of light coming straight down to a downtown public space!
The benefit is more than just "brightness."
Mental health 🧠: Lack of prolonged sunshine, often causes seasonal depression, returning sunshine well balances the mood and sleep of the townspeople.
🚶♂️ Social Side: People come out to do more outdoor activities and socialize.
📸 Economy: Become a Landmark Spot that Attracts Tourists Around the World
This project proves that technology that is not too complex can transcend geographic limits and dramatically improve people's daily quality of life. 👏💡
The city mentioned is Rjukan in Norway, which is located in a canyon. During the winter (around late September to mid-March or around 5-6 months), sunlight does not reach the city. In 2013, three Heliostats, computer-controlled mirrors were installed on the top of the mountain to reflect sunlight down the city square. It solves both lighting and mental health problems in the area.
