Digital Age Parents Must Update! Most recently, Meta (the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, Messenger) recently released a new security tool for parents. The highlight is to send parents a "weekly summary" of what our teenage children are talking about with Meta AI. 📊 There are also notifications of interest categories from the algorithm.
On the page, it sounds like we have a lighter aid, right? But there are "important conditions" that we need to know:
✋ You only have to "consent": this system is not automatically enforceable, adolescents have to accept supervision invitations, and more importantly, they have to accept supervision invitations...They can press Cancel at any time!
📉 Research says it's "almost ineffective": Meta's own internal research says that parental oversight tools have "almost no connection" to reducing children's social media addiction.
🛡️ We can't protect people who don't want to be protected: these tools can only be useful if the user (child) "consents" to watch, which most adolescents naturally refuse.
After all, this feature may be just the key to family dialogue, but it's not the perfect shield. What are your parents' opinions on this feature? Can you try it on your kids at home? Can you share it? 👇
