🇫🇮 Finland opens way for nuclear weapons through country - Russia announces preparedness to retaliate

The Finnish Parliament voted on 17 June 2026 to amend the nuclear energy law in use since 1987, which used to prohibit the import, manufacture, possession or ignition of nuclear weapons within the country.

This change has enabled Finland to accommodate the transport or introduction of nuclear weapons in certain situations, particularly during crises or wars, in order to comply with the NATO Joint Suppression and Protection System.

There are currently no NATO nuclear weapons stationed in Finland, and President Alexander Stubb has confirmed that the government has no plans to introduce them in peacetime countries.

🇷🇺 Russia heavily criticized this decision, stating that it would take political and military countermeasures if nuclear weapons were brought close to Russian borders.

Finland became a NATO member in 2023 after Russia opened full-scale military operations in Ukraine, increasing the border between NATO and Russia by about 1,340 kilometers.
