The U.S. Army prepares to test an "assault hunter-drone," linking AI to an attack circuit.
The U.S. Army 4th Infantry Brigade prepares to demonstrate the Hunter-Killer Automatic Operations concept during Project Convergence Capstone 6 exercise in the summer of 2026, linking drones, sensors, and command systems together through the Next Generation Command and Control 🤖 network.
In this concept, the "Hunter" system will monitor, find and identify targets before sending data into the network, and the "Killer" platform will receive data to plan or execute attacks, making the steps from target detection to response more rapid than sending data through traditional officials.
The key is therefore not just to have two drones flying together, but to make sensors, AI systems, command centers, and weapons able to exchange information and coordinate with each other almost in real time, even in the face of an environment in which communication is disturbed.
However, the term "automatic" does not mean that the AI is entirely freed to make the decision to kill the target itself; DoD Directive 3000.09 policy requires that automatic and semi-automatic weapon systems must be designed so that superiors and controllers can exercise "an appropriate level of human judgment" against the use of force.
Thus, the role of today's AI emphasizes finding, analyzing, prioritizing and proposing options to speed up decision-making, while the actual use of weapons also depends on system patterns, clash rules and human approval power.
If this concept is successful, the future battlefield may not have a single drone take command of one controller, but a network of several types of unmanned systems that divide their duties to find, track, defend, and attack targets under human direction.
The key question may therefore be not just how fast AI is at war, but whether humans will still be able to monitor and stop that decision in time.
