Anduril Industries, a U.S. defense technology company, began wiring production at Arsenal-1, a large automation facility near Columbus, Ohio, with Fury, a high-speed unmanned combat aircraft, as its first product. 🤖✈️
The Fury was developed for the United States Air Force's Collaborative Combat Aircraft program to fly and perform joint missions with pilots, or a concept often called "Loyal Wingman."
By 2026, the plant also plans to begin manufacturing the Barracuda family of weapons Roadrunner interception systems and at least one other still-secret project.
Anduril's key turning point was weapons design, thinking about mass production from the beginning; the company opted for materials and parts obtainable from commercial production lines, such as aluminium, business engines, and composite techniques from the ship industry, to help simplify the supply chain and speed up production.
Arsenal-1 plans a full-scale expansion to about 5 million square feet, takes in nearly $1 billion of investment, and aims to create more than 4,000 jobs in the long run, if enough orders are received, the plant is designed to support automation production of tens of thousands of systems a year.
Unlike the traditional defense industry, which often produces high-performance weapons in small numbers and time consumes, Anduril is betting on a new model that focuses on AI, automation, controllable costs and mass production capacity.
Because modern warfare may not determine who has the best weapons, but who can produce good systems faster and faster.
