🇺🇦 Ukraine is proving that fighting at sea requires no large, expensive warships.
One of the most impactful weapons is the "unmanned surface ship," or USV, equipped with cameras, navigation systems, satellite communications, and explosives before being remotely controlled to charge towards the target.
🚤 The strength is that it is small, fast-moving, and lower in cost than many types of warships or anti-ship missiles, so it can be sent into multiple simultaneous attacks to complicate the opposing defense system.
Throughout the war, Ukraine used the USV in conjunction with missiles, aerial drones and intelligence, attacking or damaging several Russian ships and bases, such that the Black Sea Fleet had to disperse and move some ships out of Crimea.
🌊 The results don't stop at the Black Sea; several naval forces are speeding up their review of port defense, small-scale target detection, electronic warfare, and maritime anti-drone systems.
This may not be the end of large warships, but it is a sign that in modern warfare, "small and mass-produced" can force a larger fleet to change its strategy.
