ðšðļ Air defense lasers continue, but the route is not as smooth as it seems.
The United States Army is testing high-power laser weapons for handling drones, rockets, artillery shells, and mortars, with one of the key systems being the 50 kW DE M â SHORAD, mounted on a Stryker armored car.
The laser has the advantage that it does not require expensive missiles at all launches, and can strike repeatedly as long as the system is energized and cooled, thus suiting a large number of cheap drones. âĄ
However, the term "unlimited bullet" does not mean that it can be fired continuously, because its effectiveness also depends on the power, cooling system, how long it takes to freeze the beam, including dust, smoke, fog, rain and atmospheric conditions.
Most recently, a Pentagon Weapons Testing Agency report indicates that the Army is not moving on to the former DE M ïž SHORAD as its primary procurement program. After testing results are not sufficient to confirm combat effectiveness and suitability, the prototype will be used as an input for the decision to procure the new E â HEL system at the end of fiscal year 2026.
Thus, laser weapons also have a future in multi-layer air defense systems, but at close range will serve to complement guns and missiles rather than replace them entirely.
