✈️ The future of air combat may no longer have fighters flying alone.
The U.S. Air Force is developing Collaborative Combat Aircraft, or CCA, a semi-autonomous pilotless fighter designed to work with the F - 35 and 6th-generation fighters like the F - 47.
June 2026, the U.S. Air Force awarded development and production contracts to General Atomics' FQ - 42 and Anduril's FQ - 44, with a target of procuring more than 150 aircraft by 2030.
🤖 CCA will use automated software to assist flight, process situations, and coordinate missions with piloted aircraft, with roles that may cover surveillance, electronic warfare, lure defense systems, carry sensors or weapons, and engage in high-risk area missions.
Because there are no pilots on board, the commanding officer can send the CCA into more dangerous missions than an expensive bra plane, but it doesn't mean the AI is given full autonomy; everything is still subject to U.S. automatic weapons system control policies and human oversight.
💰 The original goal was to make the CCA cost about a third of the F - 35, or tens of millions of dollars each, to make it easier to build a large amount of combat strength; however, the price per machine and recent contract details have not been made public.
The CCA was therefore not created to replace pilots, but served to increase the operational range, number of weapons, situational awareness, and survival chances of the entire system squadron.
