The United States began removing Turkey from the F － 35 program in 2019 after Ankara took delivery of the S － 400 air defense system from Russia, with Washington worried that the implementation of the S － 400 near the F － 35 could open up a niche for data acquisition on aircraft detection features and stealth technology.
🇺🇸 July 2026, President Donald Trump indicated that the United States was "ready to consider" giving Turkey access to the F － 35 again, reflecting that defense cooperation between the two countries may begin to move.
But the route is still on a major checkpoint because the US State Department insists that under current law, Turkey cannot receive the F － 35 as long as it occupies or operates the S － 400 and still has to go through procedures considered by Congress.
⚠️ So far, there has been no formal agreement on the sale of aircraft, deliveries or the admission of Turkey back into the F － 35 production line.
Turkey is a NATO member with a large military strength and a key strategic position; untying the S － 400 knot may therefore shape the next phase of Ankara-Washington defense relations.
