🛡️ U.S. is accelerating massive increase in production of THAAD interceptor missiles

🛡️, the United States is accelerating the massive increase in THAAD interceptor missile production after modern warfare revealed that expensive arsenals may be declining faster than replacement facilities.

In June 2026, the US Missile Defense Agency awarded Lockheed Martin an initial contract with a ceiling of $35 billion, covering seven years, to increase THAAD production from about 96 to 400 balls per year, or about 4 times more.

🚀 THAAD is designed to extract certain types of short-range, medium-range and medium-range missiles during the final phase of flight, both inside and above the atmosphere, using the "Hit-to-Kill" method, hitting targets with kinetic energy, no explosive warheads.

According to the data released, between 2006 and 2019, there were 18 intercept tests, 14 successful, and four were canceled before firing because of a test target failure. However, the test results did not mean that it was successfully extracted every time on the actual battlefield.

🏭 Increasing productivity requires expanding both factories, machinery, labor, and supply chains such as rocket motors, target search systems, infrared, electronics, and specialized materials.

Lockheed Martin then began construction of a new 87,000-square-foot manufacturing building in Troy, Alabama, with nearly 750 suppliers coordinated across 42 states, but the 400-ball-a-year goal still requires time to expand production capacity, not an immediate achievable figure.

This reflects that modern military power depends not solely on state-of-the-art weapons, but also on the ability to produce replacements between wars.
