Black Golf in Appalachia

The SkyView Golf Association was established in Asheville, North Carolina, in 1960 to foster golf competition among African American players throughout the U.S. This initiative aimed to prepare Black golfers for opportunities within the Professional Golf Association (PGA) by dismantling barriers such as the "Whites Only" clause, which was abolished in 1961. The inaugural SkyView Tournament featured an all-African American field and drew 50 participants, marking a significant milestone in golfing history. Today, SkyView remains one of the largest African American-operated tournaments in the United States, celebrating diversity in sports and encouraging inclusivity.
