Comment , I’ll take all compliments and critiques
I like to call myself a graduate of YouTube University—self-taught, no tuition, just endless scrolling and a lot of paint-stained clothes. About a year ago, I tried my hand at portrait painting. Let’s just say… the results were less Mona Lisa and more Mr. Potato Head. I got so discouraged, I put the brushes down for an entire year.
But then—something happened. A month ago, I picked them back up. And suddenly… I’ve done not one, but two paintings I’m actually proud of. Like, hang-it-on-the-wall, pour-a-glass-of-wine, invite-your-friends-over proud.
Now here’s the question: do I tell the world about this secret talent I apparently have? Because honestly—I’m still as shocked as anyone that I can actually do this.
If you’re out there and you’ve read this far , leave a comment.

Embarking on a self-taught journey in portrait painting can be both challenging and rewarding. Many artists like myself begin without formal education, relying on platforms like YouTube University to develop their skills through endless tutorials and practice. One key insight from experienced artists is the importance of consistent practice, often referred to as 'painting every day,' which builds muscle memory and sharpens observation skills essential for capturing likeness and expression in portraits. Using quality materials like gesso to prepare surfaces ensures that paint adheres well and the artwork lasts. Studying the techniques of masters and contemporary artists, including influential figures such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, provides inspiration and understanding of various styles and storytelling methods in art. Basquiat’s bold use of color and symbolism can encourage painters to develop a unique voice and embrace personal narratives. Managing setbacks is a crucial aspect of artistic growth. Discouragement, like what many face when their work doesn’t initially resemble their vision, is part of the process. Taking breaks can sometimes help restore motivation, but returning with renewed passion often leads to breakthroughs and pieces worth sharing proudly. Engaging with an art community, including online spaces dedicated to #artistsoflemon8, #oilpainting, or #blackartist, offers feedback and support that can accelerate improvement. Constructive critiques refine techniques and promote confidence. Ultimately, sharing one’s art journey publicly opens opportunities for connection, learning, and celebration. Whether you identify as a novice or seasoned painter, embracing the journey with openness to compliments and critiques enriches your creative experience and fosters lifelong artistic growth.
