Why do opinions become insulting in Thai society?ðĪ
When the comment became an insult,
In Thai society, no matter what the drama or the issue, one that will always follow is a "difference of opinion," which should be typical of a democratic society, but in reality, these opinions do not end up in a constructive exchange of ideas, if they become areas of contempt, contempt and diminish each other.
When someone expresses an opinion, especially in the online world, what often happens is not a rational argument, but a question of the commentator's intelligence, education, or even identity. Dissenting parties often choose to attack "the speaker" rather than "the issue being discussed," as if making their opponents look undervalued would automatically correct their own opinion.
This phenomenon reflects the communication culture of Thai society in many dimensions. One is to be unfamiliar with opinions. We are instilled in obedience rather than questioning. And when anyone thinks unlike us, unease is expressed in the form of clashes. Another dimension is social media that opens up space for everyone to speak immediately. Without much responsibility for words, verbal violence occurs quickly and easily.
Contempt for the opinions of others does not make society smarter, and on the contrary, it gradually undermines the safe space to express their views. People start to choose to be silent because they are afraid of being bombarded, afraid of being branded stupid, or being placed on the opposite side, without allowing them to explain their reasons. Finally, a society that should be filled with a variety of voices, leaving only the voices of the loudest or most aggressive people.
Maybe the problem is not that we think differently, but that we do not recognize that others "have different rights." Respect for the opinions of others does not mean that we have to agree, but that everyone has their own experience, set of ideas and reasons. If Thai society continues to use contempt as a tool for debate, drama will never lead to learning, and finally, there will be endless conflicts.
