Thought this group would appreciate this beautiful swallowtail on my tiger🦋lilies.
To grow tiger lilies from seeds👨🏾🌾👍🏾
Plant them in the fall after they ripen or in the spring after the last frost. Ensure the seeds or bulbils (small bulb-like structures on the stem) are planted in a well-draining, sterile seedling mix. They need a cold period (cold stratification) to germinate, which can be achieved by planting them outdoors in the fall or providing a cold treatment indoors. Expect it to take several years for the seedlings to mature into flowering plants.
The Chef breakdown👨🏾🌾👍🏾
1. Seed Collection and Storage🦋
🦋Tiger lily seeds are found in seed pods that develop after the flowers are pollinated.
🦋Harvest the seed pods when they dry and begin to split open.
🦋Store the seeds in a cool, dark place over the winter.
2. Propagation Methods🦋
Direct Planting (Fall):
Plant seeds or bulbils directly into the ground in the fall, ensuring good drainage and protection from harsh winter conditions.
🦋
Indoor Starting (Spring):
Start seeds indoors 3-6 months before the last frost. Use a sterile seed-starting mix and provide warmth (around 70°F).
🦋
Cold Stratification:
Tiger lily seeds need a cold period to germinate. If starting indoors, refrigerate the planted seeds for a few weeks after they sprout.
🦋
Bulbil Planting:
Bulbils, which form on the stem of tiger lilies, can also be planted directly into the soil in fall or spring.
3. Planting and Care🦋
🦋Soil: Tiger lilies prefer well-draining soil and a partially shaded location.
🦋Planting Depth: Plant seeds or bulbils about 1/2 to 1 inch deep.
🦋Moisture: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy.
🦋Light: Provide bright, indirect light for seedlings.
🦋Protection: Protect young seedlings from overzealous weeding and harsh weather.
4. Flowering🦋
🦋
It can take several years for tiger lily seedlings to mature into flowering plants (often 4-5 years).
🦋
Be patient and provide consistent care during this period.
