The Storyteller from Balincia is a breath of fresh air that stands out in a repetitive and inundated field of YA Fantasy. The story itself is full of surprises, a fair share of surprises and stomach turns, a budding romance that sweeps you off your feet, and a climax that feel cinematic. Where Kent shines the most, however, is his cast of characters- diverse, is an understatement- relatable, too minimizing. The reader will find themselves falling in love and wanting to follow the stories of each member of this expansive cast as it grows, and you’ll find yourself rooting for each of them. This, at it’s root, is perhaps the real magic of this book and something that has been absent in our stories for too long- the undeniable light and spark of hope, discovery, and belonging. I walked away feeling like my belief in magic had been restored.
