Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning are one of literature’s most legendary couples. Their 1845–1846 courtship, secret marriage, and elopement to Italy produced two of the Victorian era's most celebrated literary careers and one of history's most famous romantic correspondences.
Their relationship and legacy are defined by a few key chapters. The Fan Letter. Their connection began in 1845 when a younger, relatively unknown poet named Robert Browning wrote to Elizabeth Barrett, who was already a highly famous and celebrated writer.
The Secret Courtship. Because Elizabeth's father strictly forbade his children from marrying and kept her confined as an invalid, their romance unfolded through a passionate exchange of 574 letters and clandestine visits.
The Elopement. On September 12, 1846, they secretly married at St. Marylebone Parish Church and immediately fled to Italy, a move that dramatically improved Elizabeth’s frail health.
Literary Achievements. While in Italy, Elizabeth wrote Sonnets from the Portuguese (which contains her famous line, "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways") and her acclaimed Aurora Leigh. Robert produced many of his masterpieces, including Men and Women.
Elizabeth died in Robert's arms in Florence in 1861. Robert lived until 1889, eventually compiling and preserving their legendary love letters.
