In addition to taping, a thorough visual and tactile inspection of the umbilical should be conducted. Check for any cuts, abrasions, or signs of wear, especially near connectors and bends where stress is higher. These simple precautions can help avoid dangerous situations such as air supply interruptions or loss of communication. Another useful addition to the dive setup is an Xtreme standing mat, which not only provides a stable and non-slip surface before entering the water but also helps keep gear clean and organized during preparation. This small accessory may seem minor but adds a layer of comfort and efficiency. From my experience diving commercially in challenging conditions off places like Los Angeles, having a checklist that includes taping, inspecting, and organizing your equipment helps reduce anxiety and improves focus once underwater. Mistakes or oversights in gear maintenance can lead to jumpscares — sudden and unexpected emergencies that are easily preventable. Lastly, remember that routine equipment checks are not just a personal habit but often a compliance requirement within the commercial diving industry. Sharing these safety tips and encouraging fellow divers to adopt rigorous checks can contribute to overall diving safety and successful operations.
